Mon avis sur le Jornada 720
Je suis un ancien fana du Psion (3a puis
5) et à l'époque c'était certainement la plus belle
machine du marché. Suite panne écran (une faiblesse du
5) je suis passé au Jornada : cette machine m'a séduit
par ses possibilités et je me félicite de cet achat chaque
jour.
Inconvénients du J720:
- il est plus encombrant et beaucoup plus lourd que le Psion : pas question
de le trimbaler dans la poche (sauf si grande et renforcée)
- le nombre de logiciels en français est limité (à
part la suite Office livrée avec bien sûr)
- son autonomie peut être contestée: 6 à 8h.
- c'est cher (oui mais, diront certains, tout est livré :écran
couleur, lecteur mp3 (combien un lecteur seul?), suite logicielle, compléments
logiciels HP, modem, chargeur, base synchro,...)
Avantages:
- c'est aussi puissant qu'un PC portable: logiciels, internet (un peu
lent si on ouvre plusieurs fenêtres, mais quel bonheur en déplacement!),
lecteur mp3, l'ergonomie, Windows (prise en main rapide et bugs garantis
!), la couleur, le clavier !
- c'est bien plus léger qu'un portable, c'est bien moins encombrant,
son autonomie est beaucoup plus grande.
- les interfaces sont nombreuses : infrarouge, modem intégré,
lecteur CompactFlash (type I seulement :-[ ), lecteur PCMCIA (type II
!),
boutons lecteur mp3, voyants (liaison, batterie, alarme). Incomparable
!
- on trouve pas mal de logiciels, souvent en anglais, mais puissants.
Quelques jeux aussi et des émulateurs (l'émulateur GameBoy
par exemple fonctionne très bien)
Usages:
- je le synchronise avec mon fixe (Win98, office2000, via USB) et avec
mon vieux Toshiba (Win95, via port série)
- dans le train, je tape mon courrier, je prépare la réponse
aux mails, j'écoute de la musique.
- j'ai tout mon bureau avec moi: c'est facile avec le disque dur Kingston
2 gigabytes PCMCIA que j'ai ajouté. J'emporte, outre ma documentation
professionnelle, toute ma messagerie, une cinquantaine de morceaux de
musique, des sites internet que j'ai aspirés,... Et mêmes
des films DVD que je regarde ensuite à l'hotel,...
En conclusion:
je pense qu'il vaut mieux voir le Jornada comme le plus petit des micros
portables plutôt que le plus gros des PDA.
- en l'imaginant comme le plus petit des portables, c'est un enchantement
permanent, on a un vrai ordinateur passe-partout.
- si on le considère comme un PDA on est rapidement déçu
: trop lourd, trop grand, écran pas assez lumineux dehors, trop
cher,...
La préférence se fait donc
en fonction de l'usage qu'on pense en avoir (usage du clavier +bureautique
+messagerie en voyage ou bien agenda +jeux +fiches). Bon choix !

My opinion on Jornada 720
I am old faded of Psion (3a then 5) and
at the time it was certainly the most beautiful machine of the market.
Continuation breakdown screen (a weakness of the 5) I passed to Jornada:
this machine allured me by its possibilities and I am pleased with this
purchase each day.
Disadvantages of J720:
- it is more cumbersome and much heavier than Psion: not question to
take in the pocket (except so large and reinforced)
- the number of French software is limited (except Office continuation
delivered with, of course)
- its autonomy can be disputed: 6 to 8h.
- it is expensive (yes but, some will say, all is delivered: color screen,
reader mp3 (how much a reader alone?), software continuation, software
complements HP, modem, charger, bases synchro...)
Advantages:
- it is as powerful as a portable PC: software, Internet (a little slow
if several windows are opened, but which happiness in displacement!),
reader mp3, ergonomics, Windows (taken in fast hand and bugs guaranteed!),
the color, the keyboard!
- it is much lighter than a portable, it is well less cumbersome, its
autonomy is much larger.
- the interfaces are numerous: infra-red, integrated modem, reader CompactFlash
(standard I only: - [ reader PCMCIA (standard II!),
buttons reader mp3, indicators (connection, battery, alarm). Incomparable!
- one does not find software badly, often in English, but powerful.
Some plays also and of the emulators (the GameBoy emulator for example
works very well)
Uses:
- I synchronize it with my fixed (Win98, office2000, via USB) and with
my old Toshiba (Win95, via serial port)
- in the train, I type my mail, I prepare the response to the malls,
I listen to music.
- I have all my office with me: it is easy with the hard disk Kingston
2 gigabytes PCMCIA that I added. I carry, in addition to my professional
documentation, all my electronic mail, about fifty pieces of music,
Internet sites which I aspired... And same films DVD that I look at
then with the hotel...
In conclusion:
I think that it is to better see Jornada like smallest of the micro
largest portables rather than of the PDA.
- by imagining it like smallest of the portables, it is enchantement
permanent, one has a true computer wildcard.
- if one regards it as a PDA one is quickly disappointed: too much heavy,
too large, screen not enough luminous outside, too expensive...
The preference is thus made according
to the use that one thinks of having some (use of the keyboard +bureautic
+messagery on a journey or +games +databases). Good choice!
